The Ultimate Guide to the UC Application Process - Part 2
University of California - Top tips and strategies to get successful admission!
In our previous newsletter, we covered an overview of all 9 UC campuses, their eligibility requirements, and tuition fees. Now, let's dive into the application process, essay prompts, and the majors available.
In this second part of our UC series, we’ll guide you through completing the application and share valuable tips. Let’s get started!
Filling out the University of California (UC) application is a detailed and important process for students seeking admission to one of the UC campuses.
The UC system has nine undergraduate campuses, and the application process allows students to apply to one or more campuses using the same form.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you successfully fill out the UC application:
Step 1: Create a UC Application Account
Visit the UC Application Website: Go to UC Application.
Register for an Account: Provide your email, create a password, and fill in personal details to register. Make sure to use an email address that you check regularly, as all communication from UC will be sent there.
Note Deadlines: The application opens on August 1, and the submission period is from November 1 to November 30. Plan your timeline accordingly.
📌 Bonus Tip: Set reminders for key deadlines and give yourself at least two weeks before the final submission date to review your application.
Step 2: Fill in Personal Information
Personal Information Section: Enter your:
Legal Name
Date of Birth
Citizenship Status
Social Security Number (if applicable)
Residency Status
Parent/Guardian Information
Family Income (for fee waiver purposes)
Contact Information: Provide a current mailing address and phone number.
Language Proficiency: Indicate any languages spoken at home or that you are proficient in, as UC values linguistic diversity.
Example: UC values linguistic diversity, and being bilingual can be a unique strength in your application.
📌 Bonus Tip: Tip: Double-check your citizenship and residency status. Incorrect information here could affect your tuition fees and eligibility for certain scholarships or financial aid programs.
Step 3: Select Your Campuses
Choose UC Campuses: You can select any of the nine UC undergraduate campuses you wish to apply to. You’ll see options like UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles (UCLA), UC San Diego, UC Davis, etc.
Example: A student passionate about marine biology might prioritize UC San Diego for its proximity to marine research facilities.Application Fees: The fee is $70 per campus for U.S. applicants and $80 per campus for international applicants. Fee waivers are available for eligible students, covering up to four campuses.
📌 Bonus Tip: Double-check your eligibility for a fee waiver to reduce costs.
Step 4: Complete Academic History
High School Coursework:
Enter every high school you have attended.
List all courses you’ve taken from 9th to 12th grade, including summer school and online courses. Make sure to mark the honors, AP, IB, or college-level courses you’ve taken.
Include grades received for each course.
If your school is on a semester system, list grades for each semester; for quarter systems, list them accordingly.
College Coursework (if applicable):
If you’ve taken any college courses or dual enrollment classes, list them as well.
Provide the institution’s name, course titles, and grades.
📌 Bonus Tip: UC values challenging coursework, so be sure to highlight any advanced studies.
Step 5: Provide Test Scores (Optional)
SAT/ACT Scores: UC has adopted a test-optional policy, so standardized test scores are not required.
AP/IB Exam Scores: If you have taken any AP or IB exams, enter your scores here.
English Proficiency Tests: International students may need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores if English is not their first language.
Step 6: Report Activities and Awards
Extracurricular Activities: List your most meaningful extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, internships, etc.), including:
Organization name
Position held
Time commitment (hours per week and weeks per year)
Years involved
Awards and Honors: Include any academic or extracurricular awards, scholarships, or recognitions. Be concise but specific about the nature of the award.
Volunteer and Community Service: Mention any volunteer work or community involvement.
Employment: If you’ve worked during high school, list your job titles, employers, and time commitments.
📌 Bonus Tip: Focus on quality, not quantity. Select activities that showcase your passions, leadership, and impact, rather than listing every club or event you attended briefly.
Step 7: Write the Personal Insight Questions (PIQs)
Choose Four Questions: You must respond to four out of the eight provided personal insight questions. Each response has a 350-word limit.
The questions cover a range of topics, such as leadership experience, creativity, overcoming challenges, academic inspiration, etc.
Write Engaging Responses: The UC system looks for authentic answers. Be sure to write in your voice, focusing on experiences that shaped you and highlighting your unique qualities and achievements.
Edit and Proofread: Take time to draft, revise, and polish your answers. Ask a teacher or counselor to review your responses.
📌 Bonus Tip: Write a draft for all eight questions first before narrowing down to the four you will submit. This can help you identify which responses are the strongest and most representative of your personality and achievements.
We’ll discuss 8 personal insights or essay questions in detail in our next newsletter. Make sure to subscribe.
Step 8: Scholarships and Programs
Scholarship Opportunities: UC offers over 400 scholarships. You’ll be asked a series of questions to determine your eligibility for specific scholarships based on your background, interests, and achievements.
Educational Programs and Majors:
You will need to select a major for each campus. UC campuses allow you to select an alternate major in case your first choice is highly competitive.
If you are undecided, many UC campuses offer the option of applying as an undeclared major.
📌 Bonus Tip: If you’re undecided, it’s okay to apply as an undeclared major at many campuses.
Step 9: Review and Submit
Review Your Application: Go through your application carefully before submitting it. Ensure there are no mistakes in your academic history, personal information, or essay responses.
Submission Fee Payment: Pay the application fees unless you have been granted a fee waiver. You’ll need to pay before submitting your application.
Submit: Once you are certain everything is correct, submit your application. Remember that no changes can be made after submission, so ensure everything is accurate.
📌 Bonus Tip: Print or save a PDF copy of your completed application for your records before submitting. This can be helpful if you need to reference it later or if there are any technical issues.
Step 10: After Submission
Confirmation Email: You’ll receive a confirmation email from UC once you submit the application.
Track Application Status: Log in to the application portal to track the status of your application, submit additional documents if requested, and review any important updates from UC.
Submit Additional Requirements: Some campuses or programs (such as arts programs) may require supplemental applications or portfolios. Check each campus’ requirements.
📌 Bonus Tip: Set up a dedicated folder in your email to organize all UC correspondence. This will help you stay on top of any requests for additional documents or updates from the campuses.
